The origin of the word ‘genie’ is the Arabic word ‘jinn,’ which comes from the verb ‘Janna,’ meaning to ‘hide or conceal’ as the jinn are hidden from mankind.
Allah says in the Qur’an, the translation of which is: The jinn were created from the fire of a scorching wind. Surah 15, ayah 27.
Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, the translation of which is: The Angels were created from light, the Jinn were created from a mixture of fire and Adam was created from what has been described to you (clay, mud). Sahih Muslim 2996.
